My husband invited his ex-wife to his birthday dinner because, according to him, she was “still part of the family.

And she pulled out the chair next to his.

My chair.
“That’s where I’m sitting.”

And she smiled. “There’s room.”

And then: “Are you really that insecure?”

I let it go. For the moment.

Halfway through dinner she gave him a velvet box with a gold watch in it, and fourteen people applauded.

And then she got up and started clearing plates while people were still eating.
“You’ve moved everything round in here,” she called from my kitchen. “No wonder nobody can find anything.”

I followed Desmond into the hall.

“Please tell her to stop. I’m a guest in my own house.”

And he gave me a look I will have until I am old.

“Honestly? She did run a house better than you do.”

I could not say anything at all.
And for the rest of that evening he laughed with Sabine and sat with Sabine and spoke to almost nobody else.
