CHAPTER 4: THE AUDIT ON THE BROKEN LEMON CAKE
United States Attorney Marcus Cooper stepped forward, opening the four-hundred-page leather litigation brief:
*THUD.*
The heavy volume struck the mahogany dining table, pulverizing Mark’s crystal scotch glass into flat powder:
`CRIMINAL DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN ESTATE`
`v.
MARK ARTHUR VANCE, CLAIRE BEATRICE STERLING-VANCE,`
`BRENDA BEATRICE VANCE, AND CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M.
STERLING-VANCE.`
`CHARGES: EIGHTY-FOUR COUNTS OF CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED SABOTAGE OF CLASSIFIED CONTINUITY-OF-GOVERNMENT BEDROCK,`
`COMMERCIAL FACTORING FRAUD AND CONCEALMENT OF COMMISSIONED TITLE (18 U.S.C. § 1343),`
`AND SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TO USURP SOVEREIGN ADMIRALTY ESCROWS.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`
“Mark Arthur Vance and Claire Beatrice Sterling-Vance,” Marcus Cooper stated, every syllable dropping like an eighty-pound iron anvil into thirty fathoms of sub-zero water:
“Three hours ago, under an emergency Title 50 National Security warrant executed at the Zurich clearinghouses and your private factoring office in Vaduz, naval forensic intelligence unsealed your private transponder logs.”
Cooper pointed his gold Montblanc pen straight at Mark’s sweating forehead:
“You didn’t divorce Claire two years ago, Mark.”
“Your divorce was an un-registered paper sham fabricated to allow you to infiltrate Rachel Mercer’s life!”
“Claire was deployed today to establish an adverse domestic occupancy claim over the master geodetic dining threshold of Valve Station Ten!”
“You brought her into this house to relegate your pregnant wife to a folding chair!”
“You had Claire plant that acoustic transponder to record Rachel’s verbal submission on federal telemetry!”
Cooper bared his teeth in a razor-thin, cold line of white bone:
“Because under Clause Fourteen of the 1944 Charter:”
“If an active commissioned lineal custodian is publicly superseded by a prior civilian spouse within her own sovereign homestead on a recorded national holiday or anniversary, and fails to assert an armed chancery protest before midnight…”
“…the entire sixty-billion-dollar sovereign defense title defaults automatically to the husband’s family as statutory conservators for the court!”
“Tonight was your statutory deadline, Mark!”
Cooper checked his chronometer:
`20:14:22 EST.`
“Midnight, October second, twenty-twenty-six!”
“The seventy-year spendthrift restriction on Arthur Mercer’s charter expires in less than four hours!”
“While you were eating that lemon cake, your uncle’s private equity attorneys were sitting in an executive suite at the Willard Hotel in Washington with an unsealed, four-hundred-page petition for adverse sovereign default!”
“And at zero-two-hundred hours tonight in Washington…”
Cooper’s voice dropped into a terrifying, sub-zero register:
“…Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance was scheduled to convene an extraordinary emergency midnight session of the Supreme Court inside the West Conference Room beneath One First Street to execute the master conveyance deed—transferring forty miles of nuclear defense bedrock to The Valkyrie Trust for sixty billion dollars in carried interest!”
Mark let out an un-human, animalistic shriek from the table:
*“CALL ARTHUR!
CALL MY UNCLE!
HE IS THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES!
HE CONVENES THE COURT AT ZERO-TWO-HUNDRED HOURS!”*
He lunged toward his tuxedo jacket on the sideboard, clawing for his encrypted satellite transceiver:
*CLACK.*
Two SOG tactical operators stepped forward in fluid, synchronized mechanical velocity:
Their gloved hands caught Mark by his bespoke lapels and his right wrist in mid-flight, spun his six-foot frame one hundred and eighty degrees against the table, and drove his face down into the crushed buttercream of his own birthday cake with four hundred pounds of downward kinetic leverage:
*SLAM.*
His cheek struck the lemon glaze, sugar, silver dragees, and frosting exploding across the linen, his platinum cuff links popping from his wrists:
*click-clatter-roll.*
A pair of heavy-duty, double-locking, high-security stainless-steel military transport restraints ratcheted around Mark’s wrists with two sharp, definitive snaps that sounded like twin rifle shots across the silent room:
*SNAP.*
A second set of chains clamped around his ankles—the identical stainless-steel irons used for capital traitors at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth:
*SNAP-CLINK.*
Beside him, two female federal marshals pinned Claire Vance to the parquetry:
*SLAM.*
Her three-thousand-dollar emerald Valentino dress was pinned under three hundred pounds of tactical weight, the transport irons crunching around her manicured wrists:
*SNAP.*
Claire wept into the floorboards, spit, lemon frosting, and mascara pooling around her cheek:
“Mark!
Tell them!
We are the Sterling family!
You cannot put a woman in military chains in Great Falls!”
I walked over to where my husband lay pinned in his birthday cake.
I stood looking down at the man who had told me forty minutes ago that Claire ran the household better than me.
I reached down to my left hand, pulled off the platinum wedding band he had placed on my finger seven months ago—the band engraved with his family motto:
*SLIP.*
I dropped the platinum ring straight into the center of the crushed lemon-thyme drizzle cake smeared across Mark Vance’s forehead:
*TINK.*
“You asked me forty minutes ago how dare I, Mark,” Colonel Rachel Mercer whispered softly:
“I dared because this house is not your kingdom.”
“It is the bedrock of the United States.”
“Claire ran the household better?”
I leaned down until my clear slate-gray eyes filled his entire field of vision:
“Claire ran straight into a federal penitentiary.”
“And tonight…”
I pointed toward Uncle David:
“…the transport flies straight to Fort Leavenworth.”
CLICK-CLACK.
The two federal marshals hauled Mark Vance, Claire Vance, and Brenda Vance to their feet by their armpits, marching them down the front walkway in waist-chains and leg-irons toward the armored tactical transport BearCats waiting on Blackthorn Ridgeway:
*SCREEECH.*
Behind them were marched their forged factoring agreements, their encrypted offshore banking tokens, and their twelve-million-dollar factoring ledgers, sealed inside heavy forensic evidence drums:
*CRASH-ROAR-PANT.*
The front door of 1404 Blackthorn Ridgeway closed behind them with an authoritative, airtight, pneumatic *THUD*.
The dining room returned to silence.
The only sound left was the sixty-cycle hum of the White Hawk’s turbine idling outside on the lawn, the steady breathing of Admiral Mercer beside me, and the rhythmic *tack… tack… tack* of Arthur Mercer’s chronometer watch on my wrist.
