My husband invited his ex-wife to his birthday because she was “still family” — he didn’t expect what I did next.
Mark and I had been married for seven months, and I was four months pregnant with our first baby.
He was thoughtful and kind.
I felt so loved around him.
But one detail always felt off.
His ex-wife, Claire, kept finding her way into our conversations.
I’d cook him dinner or change something in the kitchen, hoping he’d like it, and somehow we’d end up talking about how Claire used to do things.
“Claire always warmed the plates.”
“Claire never bought that brand.”
It bothered me, and I told him so right away.
Mark just shrugged.
His birthday was coming up.
Mark was planning to invite a few guests when he said,
“I want to invite Claire.
She’s still family, and she should be here with me.”
I was stunned and reminded him that he had a new family now, with a baby on the way.
He hugged me and assured me I was taking it the wrong way.
Yeah, I almost believed him.
On his birthday, Claire arrived several hours before the party was supposed to start.
“Oh, these flowers go in the blue vase,” she said, opening our cabinet without asking.
Then she moved my place cards.
“Mark belongs at the head of the table, honey.”
She took the chair beside him.
It was the one I had set for myself.
“That’s my seat,” I snapped.
Claire smiled.
“There’s plenty of room.
Are you really that insecure?”
Halfway through dinner, she got up and began collecting plates before everyone had finished eating.
“You’ve rearranged everything,” she called from the kitchen.
“No wonder you can’t find anything.”
I followed Mark into the hallway.
“Please ask her to stop.
She’s treating me like a guest in my own home.”
He glanced toward the dining room.
“Well, she honestly did run the household better than you.”
To say I was angry would be an understatement.
For most of the party, Mark ignored me, spending his time with Claire.
Our guests kept giving me sympathetic looks.
But by then, I had decided to give Mark and Claire a surprise of my own.
And when I did, Mark’s smile vanished like a wave washing footprints from the sand.
“How dare you?” he shouted.
