His hands began to shake so violently that his handcuffs rattled loudly against the stainless-steel table.
“A… a daughter…?” Diego choked out, his jaw unhinging in pure, unadulterated horror. “She’s… she’s completely healthy?!”
“Laura Mendoza signed your capital treason indictment yesterday morning in the presence of the Chief Judge Advocate General, Diego,” Albright revealed, each word falling like an iron block onto his skull:
“You told Laura that she was an unfaithful traitor who destroyed your marriage.”
“You posted photographs with your mistress celebrating her humiliation.”
“And in Arthur Caldwell’s sworn federal proffer executed yesterday morning in the presence of the Attorney General:”
Albright leaned forward until her face was six inches from Diego’s petrified eyes:
“Caldwell confirmed that you and Paula were never his partners.”
“You were his disposable operational mules.”
“Under the scuttle contract Caldwell prepared three weeks ago:”
“The moment Laura was forced onto the surgical table at Berth Four on Thursday evening, Caldwell’s private wet-work team was scheduled to execute you and Paula inside the cargo hold…”
“And then dump your bodies into the Gulf Stream to permanently sever the witness trail.”
“You weren’t going to live like kings in Zurich, Diego.”
“You were going to be shark bait sixty miles off the Florida Keys before Friday morning.”
Diego Vance let out a strange, high-pitched, strangled animal wail from the table.
He slammed his forehead violently against the stainless steel, weeping in loud, broken, snot-smeared gasps of absolute, catastrophic realization:
“NO! NO, NO, NO! CALDWELL PROMISED ME! HE TOLD ME I WAS A GENIUS! HE TOLD ME LAURA WAS JUST A STUPID DESIGNER WHO WOULD NEVER FIGURE IT OUT!”
Caldwell collapsed sideways against the table, his hands clawing frantically at his orange prison collar, screaming into the empty air of the room in wild, unhinged hysterics:
“LAURA! MARCUS! SAVE ME! TELL THEM I BUILT THE DEFENSE NETWORK! YOU CAN’T BURY ME IN ADX FLORENCE!”
I took one slow, deliberate step forward, looking down at the two ruined parasites weeping in their own filth.
“You told me in my kitchen three months ago that life takes away a lie to give you peace, Diego,” I said softly.
“You told everyone that I was a disgraced woman.”
“You were right about one thing.”
“Life did take away a lie.”
“It took away an eight-year illusion of a husband.”
“And in its place…”
I smoothed my jacket over my daughter:
“…it gave me an unbreakable empire.”
I gathered the litigation files from the table and turned toward the heavy steel door.
“Laura Mendoza is not taking your calls, Mr. Vance,” Deputy Attorney General Albright said, stepping through the threshold.
“Because while you were planning her destruction…”
“She was commanding the sovereign legacy of Don Emilio Vazquez.”
The heavy pneumatic steel door slammed shut with an echoing, concussive, and sovereign *THUD*.

Six months later.
The early spring morning sun broke warm, golden, and pristine over the soaring neoclassical marble architecture of the **Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C.**
Room 216—the grand, vaulted hearing chamber of the **Senate Armed Services Committee**—was packed to maximum, standing-room-only capacity with five hundred observers: cabinet secretaries, foreign ambassadors, four-star flag officers from all six service branches, and one hundred national television correspondents.
Sitting at the defense table, wearing bright orange federal inmate jumpsuits and heavy high-tensile steel transport chains linking their wrists to their waists, were **Arthur Caldwell**, **Arthur Vance**, **Diego Vance**, **Paula Sterling**, and thirty-four corporate brokers and corrupt defense contractors from Vanguard-Apex.
They looked like ancient, shattered corpses; their tailored Italian suits, high-society vanity, and arrogance had been stripped away forever; their hands trembled continuously against the polished mahogany table beneath the blinding television lights.
At the center witness podium in the well of the Senate chamber stood **Laura Mendoza-Vazquez**.
I wore an exquisite, custom-tailored ivory silk suit, standing tall with my shoulders squared, my chin lifted, radiating the serene, triumphant majesty of a woman who had conquered every shadow.
Beside me stood **Special Agent Marcus Vance** and **Dr. Salinas**.
Flanking us was **United States Deputy Attorney General Sarah Albright**.
And sitting in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a handmade white lace christening gown, sleeping peacefully in the arms of a trusted pediatric nurse, was my three-month-old daughter: **Emilia Vazquez**.
“All rise!” the Senate bailiff’s deep baritone boomed through the vaulted chamber.
**”The Senate Armed Services Committee, sitting in extraordinary joint session with the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, is now in session. The Honorable Senator Marcus Sterling presiding.”**
Senator Sterling struck his heavy brass gavel with concussive, echoing force:
*BANG.*
“In the matter of Case Number 2026-CR-9998,” Senator Sterling announced, his voice rolling through the chamber:
**”The United States of America versus Arthur Caldwell, Arthur Vance, Diego Vance, Paula Sterling, and Vanguard-Apex Logistics LLC.”**
Senator Sterling looked down from the dais at the defense table:
“The court has finalized the mandatory criminal sentences executed under Title 18 of the United States Code and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO):”
“**Arthur Caldwell** is hereby sentenced to **Two Consecutive Terms of Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole at the United States Penitentiary, Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX Florence) in Colorado, in permanent solitary confinement under Special Administrative Measures**.”
“**Arthur Vance** is sentenced to **Thirty-Five Years in the Federal Correctional Complex in Coleman, Florida**.”
“**Diego Vance**, for his lead role in high treason against the United States, military bio-cryptographic sabotage, the attempted premeditated murder of his unborn child, and aggravated domestic battery utilizing chemical weapons, is hereby sentenced to **Life Imprisonment with Hard Labor at the United States Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, without the possibility of parole, with total forfeiture of all marital claims, assets, and property**.”
“**Paula Sterling**, for her role in domestic conspiracy, the administration of unapproved biological abortifacients, and transnational money laundering, is sentenced to **Twenty-Five Years in the Federal Correctional Institution for Women in Aliceville, Alabama, without the possibility of parole**.”
“Your petitions for estate inheritance, corporate dividends, family trust distributions, and appellate reviews are dismissed with total, permanent, and irrevocable prejudice.”
