My Husband Had a Vasectomy and Accused Me of Cheating—Then My Ultrasound Revealed Two Heartbeats

CHAPTER 13: A DIFFERENT KIND OF EMERGENCY

At twenty weeks, a routine scan raised a concern about one baby’s growth. Dr. Porter referred me to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist. I spent two days frightened that my personal crisis had distracted me from something important.

The specialist explained the measurements, their uncertainty, and the plan for closer monitoring. She did not promise everything would be fine. She gave me specific questions to ask and signs that required urgent attention.

I told Camille I needed to slow the legal process wherever possible. She agreed to handle routine communications and involve me only when decisions were necessary. For the first time, I let someone else carry part of the burden.

Leah drove me to appointments. My mother flew in from Colorado and filled the freezer with meals. She never once asked why I hadn’t saved the marriage. She asked where I kept the extra blankets.
