He spoke quietly.
“Margaret, if you’re watching this, something has gone wrong.”
Clara froze.
The video continued.
“I don’t know how much time I have.”
Roscoe looked toward the windshield.
Then whispered:
“I made a mistake trusting Garrison.”
Clara covered her mouth.
She opened the second video.
It showed a document.
Then another.
Then a photograph of Garrison standing beside a man Clara didn’t recognize.
The third video contained Roscoe speaking about financial records.
The fourth showed a remote property.
The fifth was dated three days after the boat was found.
And the sixth contained the words that sent Clara running upstairs.
“IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, DON’T TRUST GARRISON.”
I watched the videos with trembling hands.
The fifth recording showed Roscoe sitting inside a dim room.
His face was bruised.
His clothes were dirty.
He looked exhausted.
Behind him, I could hear someone crying.
A child.
My heart stopped.
