Hannah wiped at her face.
I watched my son laughing with the little girl he’d worked so hard to surprise.
The moment was everything he’d imagined when he first saw that dress in the shop window.
Then I noticed someone near the fence.
My mother-in-law.
She had come to the party after all.
She stood watching Lucy spin.
For once, she said nothing.

The Night After Lucy’s Birthday Party
That evening, I found myself standing near Noah’s bed, watching him sleep.
Cyril came into the room.
« Proud? » he asked.
« Very, » I whispered.
Then I added, « Still furious about the lunches. »
« Same. »
We both knew we’d have to keep helping Noah understand that generosity shouldn’t come at the expense of his own wellbeing.
But neither of us could deny how much love had gone into the gift.
He had noticed that Hannah couldn’t afford a bigger celebration.
He had remembered the dress.
He had worked and saved because he wanted Lucy to feel special.
There was something remarkable about that.
Still, I thought the entire situation was behind us.
Lucy had her dress.
Noah had promised to eat lunch.
And the birthday party had been a success.
I had no idea what was waiting outside our house the next morning.
Noah Came Running Into Our Bedroom Before 6:30
We had barely gotten out of bed when Noah came charging into our room.
« Mom! Dad! »
I sat up immediately.
« What happened? »
« Come outside! »
Something in his voice made Cyril move before he was fully awake.
His feet hit the cold floor.
I followed our son through the hallway.
We hurried toward the front door and stepped onto the porch.
Then I stopped.
Our entire front lawn was covered with lunchboxes.
At least fifty.
Maybe more.
I had never seen anything like it.
They stretched from the porch almost to the sidewalk.
Some were bright and colorful.
Others were old-fashioned metal boxes.
There were insulated bags, superhero designs, and lunchboxes decorated with dinosaurs.
Noah turned slowly, trying to take everything in.
