« Are these mine? »
I shook my head.
« I have absolutely no idea. »
The Biggest Lunchbox Had a Strange Message
Cyril stepped outside behind us.
« What in the… »
Then Noah spotted something in the middle of the lawn.
It was much larger than the other lunchboxes.
A battered metal box, almost big enough to hold a small toolbox.
Across the lid, someone had taped a white card.
Three words were written on it.
OPEN THIS FIRST.
I immediately felt uneasy.
We didn’t know who had left the lunchboxes.
We didn’t know what was inside them.
And whoever had arranged them had apparently expected us to discover them that morning.
« Noah, wait, » I warned.
But he was already kneeling beside the large metal box.
He reached toward the clasp.
It snapped open.
Then he lifted the lid.
And stopped moving.
My Son Went Pale When He Saw What Was Inside
« Noah? »
He didn’t answer.
Then he scrambled backward so quickly that he nearly tripped over one of the smaller lunchboxes.
His face had gone pale.
« Mom… »
I hurried toward him.
Inside the enormous lunchbox were thick bundles of cash.
There was also a work identification badge belonging to a woman none of us recognized.
A key with a bright plastic tag.
And a wedding photograph.
I stared at the contents.
It wasn’t what I’d expected.
In fact, I had no idea what to make of it.
Noah looked from the cash to the identification badge.
Then to the key.
« Mom… somebody left all their stuff here. »
He looked up at me.
« Call the police. »
Before I could respond, someone shouted from the sidewalk.
« Please don’t! »
A Stranger Came Running Toward Our Lawn
I spun around.
A woman was hurrying toward us.
She was laughing and waving both hands.
She appeared to be in her thirties, and I noticed that she had Down syndrome.
Behind her stood several adults.
They had been waiting beyond our hedge.
The lunchboxes hadn’t simply been abandoned.
The group had arranged them on our lawn and stayed nearby, waiting for Noah to discover the surprise.
The woman reached us, still smiling.
Noah pointed at the giant lunchbox.
« WHY IS YOUR MONEY IN MY YARD? »
She stopped.
Looked into the box.
Then looked at Noah.
« Because apparently I did a terrible job making this look less criminal. »
Cyril covered his mouth to hide a laugh.
I was still trying to understand what was happening.
Then I saw Hannah approaching.
Lucy was with her.
And she was still wearing the red dress.
The Woman Introduced Herself as Tessa
The woman pointed toward the identification badge inside the lunchbox.
« That’s me, » she said. « I’m Tessa. »
Noah narrowed his eyes.
« You put all that money there? »
« With supervision, » Tessa replied.
Then she added, « Apparently eight-year-olds are very suspicious accountants. »
Cyril struggled not to laugh again.
Hannah stepped closer, carrying Lucy on one hip.
She explained that the lunchboxes had come from families connected to the neighborhood community center.
The previous night, she had shared a photograph of Lucy wearing the red dress.
Noah looked at her.
« You told everybody I skipped lunch? »
Hannah answered gently.
« I told them what you did. Including the part where your mom said you weren’t allowed to do it again. »
I was grateful she’d included that detail.
