MY 18-YEAR-OLD SON HAD MOVED IN WITH HIS BEST FRIEND

“Holly, he’s the best chance Ezra has —”

“Then let him choose. With a doctor who isn’t yours. With people whose only job is protecting him. That’s how it works, Dale. That’s how it’s supposed to work. Nobody owes anybody a piece of their body.”

Dale looked at me for a long time. Then he looked at Renata. Then, finally, he lowered his head.

“You’re right,” he whispered. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

From inside the room, Wyatt’s voice came out steady and clear.

“Mom. Can you find out who I talk to about getting tested? Properly.”

Ezra grabbed his wrist. “Wy, no. That’s not why I told you —”

“I know why you told me.” Wyatt didn’t pull his arm away. “You didn’t ask me. So this isn’t you asking. It’s me offering.”

I’d never been so proud of anyone in my life. Or so terrified.

The next three months were the longest of my life.
