“Someone wants to meet Julian. We’ve been asked to bring both of you.”
I frowned.
“Who exactly wants to see him?”
The officer paused before mentioning Maya’s father.
Then he explained that an unexpected incident had taken place after Maya received her wheelchair.
My heart began racing.
I’d thought Julian’s sacrifice was the end of the story.
But apparently, it had started something much bigger.
Officer Daniels must have seen the alarm on my face.
“Everyone is safe,” he said quickly. “Maya is fine.”
I released a breath I had not realized I was holding.
“Then why are two police officers at my house at seven in the morning?”
“Because,” Officer Cooper said, “Maya’s father works nights at St. Anne’s Hospital. He called us shortly after midnight.”
Julian stepped closer to me.
“Why?”
Daniels looked at him.
“Your wheelchair arrived yesterday afternoon?”
Julian nodded.
