My 13-year-old son sold his beloved guitar to buy a new wheelchair for a girl in his class

“Because Mobility Bridge has helped six Westbrook families over the last three years.”

The room became very quiet.

Maya spoke first.

“You mean other kids might have bad chairs too?”

Dr. Mercer didn’t answer immediately.

Rebecca did.

“Yes.”

Julian moved nearer Maya.

Then he noticed something among the documents.

A photograph.

He reached toward it but stopped before touching it.

“Wait.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“What?”

Julian pointed.

“That guy.”

It was a photograph from a charity equipment delivery ceremony taken months earlier.

Several adults stood around a smiling family.

One man remained partly turned away from the camera.

Gray sweatshirt.

Dark baseball cap.

Julian’s face drained of color.

“I think that’s who I saw yesterday.”

Officer Daniels stepped closer.

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

Julian stared harder.

“But I remember the shoes.”

“The shoes?”

“They were bright orange.”

We all looked at the photograph.

The man’s shoes were bright orange.
