I worked four years of overtime and paid sixty-one thousand four hundred dollars so my wife could graduate with no debt. The printed programme in my jacket pocket had another man’s name in it.

Griffin Talliard is thirty-eight and he is a charge nurse on a ward where Dessa did two placements, in 2023 and again in 2024.

He was not her instructor. He was something worse for him, which is that he was the senior registered person on a unit where she was a student, twice, while it was going on.

That has a policy attached to it and the policy is not mine to enforce and I did not enforce it.

What I did was write one letter, to the director of nursing, with the placement dates and the tenancy dates on one page and nothing else on it. No adjectives. I am a project manager; I know what a document is for.

He is not on that ward.

I have been asked whether I am proud of that letter and the answer is that I am not anything about it. It is the single most accurate thing I have ever written and I felt nothing when I sent it.
