I worked four years of overtime and paid sixty-one thousand four hundred dollars so my wife could graduate with no debt. The printed programme in my jacket pocket had another man’s name in it.

PART 3 — THE RECEIPTS
I keep everything. I have kept everything since about 2013 and Dessa used to do an impression of me about it.

It took me four evenings.

The programme at the Hardwick was eight semesters of tuition and fees. I went through the invoices from the college and added them up properly for the first time in four years, instead of paying what she told me the number was.

Forty-three thousand nine hundred dollars.

I paid sixty-one thousand four hundred.

Seventeen and a half thousand went somewhere that was not that college.

It went into a one-bedroom flat on Carrow Street in Brentmere. Deposit in the September of 2023, and rent since.

It came out of the account I topped up whenever she said the words lab fees or board prep, which she said about once every six weeks, and I never asked for an invoice because asking my wife for an invoice felt like the kind of husband I did not want to be.

Two years. Eleven minutes’ drive from my house.
