I woke up at midnight and found my fiancée dragging our unconscious, bl00d-covered housekeeper down the hallway. “What did you do to her?” I screamed….007

Then, his gaze dropped to seven-year-old Matthew, standing beside my knee in his oversized fleece jacket, Nicholas’s gold chronometer gleaming on his wrist.

Arthur’s throat worked in a dry, spastic hitch:

*k-k-k.*

“This proceeding is a legal monstrosity, Eleanor!” Arthur Vance rasped, his voice echoing off the concrete walls in a shredded, desperate fury:

“I am the Chief Justice of the United States! Under Article Two, Section Four of the Constitution, a federal judge can only be removed by impeachment in the House of Representatives and conviction by two-thirds of the Senate!”

Arthur rattled his transport chains violently against the steel chair:

*CLANG-CLINK.*

“You cannot convene a drumhead court-martial in a utility bunker! You cannot drag my granddaughter through a tactical assault! You cannot strip my title based on the unverified ravings of a hospital housekeeper and a corporate builder who thinks he’s an investigator!”

Arthur lunged forward as far as the belly chain would allow, his yellowed teeth bared:

“Where is the indictment?! Where is the statutory authority?!”

Judge Eleanor Mercer did not pick up a wooden gavel.

She lifted her gold-headed surveyor’s cane three inches off the mahogany bench and brought it down with a single, concussive stroke that cracked the veneer:

KABOOOOM.

The sound resonated through the bunker like an artillery shot.

“Be silent, Arthur,” Judge Mercer commanded.

Her voice had no volume; it was fifty decibels of pure, unyielding Maine granite that sucked the breath clean out of the room:

“You are not being tried under the domestic criminal statutes of the District of Columbia.”

“You are not appearing before an Article Three appellate panel.”

Judge Mercer reached into the red-ribboned portfolio before her, pulling out an unsealed, four-hundred-page parchment brief stamped with the great seal of the **UNITED STATES ADMIRALTY COMMISSION (1944)**:

“Under the emergency provisions of the **Rivers and Harbors Defense Charter of Nineteen-Forty-Four** and the **Articles of War**…”

Judge Mercer turned the vellum pages with deliberate slowness:

“…any individual, regardless of judicial or civilian station, who engages in premeditated armed sabotage, biological extraction, or transnational sequestration of sovereign military retaliatory arteries during an active defense posture… is classified as an unlawful enemy combatant subject to immediate admiralty inquest.”

Judge Mercer looked Arthur Vance dead in his eyes:

“You spent forty years pretending you were a constitutional scholar, Arthur.”

“You forgot that this ground beneath your feet… was deeded to the United States Navy eighty years before you took the oath.”
