Part 3
The girls’ words dismantled the case in seconds.
“He’s not him,” Lily told the detectives, her voice thin but steady. “The man who took us was younger. Different build. Different walk.” Hannah added something that stayed with them: the kidnapper rarely spoke, but when he did, his voice was strangely familiar. They both had the feeling they’d heard it before, maybe even before the trip began.
The ranger’s alibi checked out too. On the day of the abduction, Hale was twenty miles from the river. Three employees at a roadside auto shop confirmed it, and gas station footage showed him paying for fuel and repairing a tire on his SUV. 🔧
The rope with his DNA turned out to be from a batch written off years earlier and stored in an open shed behind the central base, where anyone could take it. His fingerprints were on it because he had personally logged that batch in 2014.
On August 29, Gordon Hale was released, and every charge against him was dropped. The theory that had seemed so solid fell apart into fragments. The real kidnapper had used discarded park equipment and an old cabin everyone knew about, and had let suspicion fall on a respected ranger.
