I never told my arrogant son-in-law I was a retired Federal Prosecutor. At 5 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, he called: “Pick up your daughter at the bus terminal”….007

CHAPTER 4: THE AUDIT ON THE BELGIAN LINEN

Marcus Sterling-Vance did not stand up.

He remained pinned against the marble sideboard, his pupils dilated until the blue of his irises was completely swallowed by black. His manicured hands, flat against the cold stone, began to tremble with that spastic, involuntary tremor of an embezzler whose vault door has just been blown off its hinges by an artillery shell:

*tick-tick-tick-tick.*

His mouth worked in dry, spastic, un-coordinated clicks:

*k-k-k.*

“E… Eleanor…?” Marcus wheezed, his voice paper-thin, like dry parchment burning in an empty grate:

“Mrs. Carter…? What… what kind of insane joke is this?! Did you hire a private security company to assault my home on Thanksgiving?!”

Sylvia poked her head out from beneath the tablecloth, her hair caked in cranberry sauce, her face bleached of all color:

“YOU DEMENTED OLD CRONE!” Sylvia shrieked, spitting turkey grease from her lip: “I TOLD MARCUS TO PUT YOU IN A NURSING HOME THREE YEARS AGO! YOU BROKE MY FIVE-THOUSAND-DOLLAR DOORS! ARTHUR, HAVE THESE GUARDS ARREST HER FOR ARMED ROBBERY!”

Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance slowly, deliberately rose from his seat at the foot of the table.

Even amidst the pulverized glass and the tactical laser beams, the seventy-six-year-old jurist attempted to deploy that terrifying, imperial majesty that had cowed three decades of presidents and senators:

“Eleanor,” Arthur said softly.

His voice was that deep, velvet cello, resonant, unhurried:

“You have committed fourteen separate capital felonies under Title Eighteen of the United States Code by executing an armed military breach of this private residence.”

Arthur adjusted his midnight-blue lapels, looking past me toward Commander Donahue:

“Commander, whoever authorized this operation will be indicted by a federal grand jury before sunrise. Remove your men from my nephew’s property immediately, or I will have the Director of the FBI revoke your charter before you clear the driveway.”

I walked down the length of the twenty-foot banquet table.

My leather shoes crushed the shattered Baccarat crystal and the silver serving spoons into the floorboards with a clean, concussive *crunch… tack… crunch*.

I stopped at the head of the table.

I looked down at Victoria Sterling, who was cowering behind her chair, clutching her seven-carat stolen diamond ring against her throat:

“Take off the ring, Victoria,” I said softly.

My voice had no volume.

Yet it filled that four-thousand-square-foot ruined room with forty decibels of pure, unyielding, polar diamond:

“That ring was purchased with the dividend yield of **The Mercer Sovereign Trust**—an account established thirty years before your father opened his first shell company in Vaduz.”

Victoria’s hands shook so violently the ring slipped from her knuckle, clattering across the silver platter holding the carved turkey:

*TINK.*

I turned forty-five degrees to my right.

I looked at Marcus.

“You called me at five o’clock this morning, Marcus,” Eleanor Mercer-Carter whispered.

Every syllable fell like an eighty-pound iron anvil dropped from thirty thousand feet onto a ship’s deck:

“You told me to come pick up my trash.”

“You told me my daughter was having an emotional tantrum.”

I reached inside my coat, pulled out a stack of high-resolution, eight-by-ten forensic photographs taken in Trauma Bay 3 thirty minutes ago, and slammed them flat atop the golden roasted turkey:

*THUD.*

The heavy paper splashed cold gravy across Marcus’s bespoke flannel trousers:

“Look at the photographs, Marcus.”

“Look at the linear transverse crush injuries across her thoracic cage.”

“Look at the spiral fracture of her right arm where she tried to shield her face while your mother held her down by the hair.”

Sylvia let out a strangled, animalistic gasp, backing two paces into the corner:

*“SHE ATTACKED ME! SHE WAS HYSTERICAL! I WAS DEFENDING MY HOUSE!”*

“You were not defending your house, Sylvia,” United States Attorney Marcus Cooper spoke from the threshold.

The Chief Federal Prosecutor stepped forward, opening an unsealed, four-hundred-page federal grand jury indictment stamped with the red wax seal of the **UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE EASTERN DISTRICT OF VIRGINIA**:

`CRIMINAL DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN ESTATE`
`v. MARCUS A. STERLING-VANCE, SYLVIA S. VANCE,`
`AND CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M. STERLING-VANCE.`
`CHARGES: CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE, SECTION THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE BY BRUTAL DEPRAVATION (18 U.S.C. § 1111),`
`TRANSNATIONAL MONEY LAUNDERING UNDER TITLE EIGHTEEN,`
`AND SEDITIOUS ATTEMPTED EXPROPRIATION OF STRATEGIC DEFENSE ASSETS.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`

“At zero-six-hundred hours this morning, Mrs. Vance,” Cooper continued, his gravelly voice dropping forty decibels of pure, un-forgiving Maine iron:

“A specialized federal forensic team entered this property under an emergency search warrant authorized under **Title Ten of the United States Code**.”

Cooper pointed his gold Montblanc pen toward the rear terrace:

“We recovered the Callaway titanium-core seven-iron from the ornamental koi pond behind the pool house.”

“The shaft bore the latent fingerprints of Marcus Sterling-Vance.”

“The hosel bore the epidermal tissue and arterial blood of Chloe Eleanor Vance.”

“And on the leather grip… our technicians matched the high-grade hand cream that Sylvia Vance applies three times a day.”

Cooper bared his teeth in a cold, terrifying line of white bone:

“You didn’t beat her because she broke a rug, Sylvia.”

“You beat her because forty-eight hours ago, Chloe discovered that her husband was using her engineering security credentials to stage an illegal commercial bypass tap into **Conduit Ten**.”
