CHAPTER 3: THE BREACH AT TWELVE-FOURTEEN
Not a flicker.
Not a brownout caused by the winter storm outside.
A catastrophic, instantaneous severing of the mansion’s primary three-phase electrical feed:
*SNAP-CLICK.*
The three crystal chandeliers died instantly, plunging the twenty-foot dining room into absolute, pitch-black subterranean darkness.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Sylvia shrieked, her wineglass knocking over, spilling vintage red across the Belgian linen cloth: “Marcus! Did you forget to pay the auxiliary generator balance?!”
“Relax, Mother,” Marcus’s voice came through the dark, irritated and sharp: “It’s a localized transformer pop. The secondary diesel units will kick on in five seconds—”
*KABOOOOM.*
The monolithic, four-inch-thick solid oak double doors of the formal dining room did not swing open on their heavy brass hinges.
They were cleaved clean off their structural jambs by a sixty-pound linear hydraulic tactical breaching charge deployed at three thousand feet per second:
*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*
A concussive, one-hundred-and-forty-decibel shockwave blew through the room, shattering the antique glass cabinet into fifty thousand glittering shards, obliterating the china plates, and throwing the sixteen guests backward out of their mahogany chairs onto the floorboards:
*SCREAMS-PANTING-TERROR.*
Through the billowing white clouds of pulverized oak dust and scorched hexogen smoke…
Illuminating the ruined room in forty thousand lumens of blinding, clinical tactical halogen…
Rushed twelve operators from the **Regional Special Weapons and Tactics Division (SWAT)** and the **United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG)**.
They wore sterile dark-charcoal Nomex drysuits, Level IV boron-carbide plate carriers, and Ops-Core ballistic helmets. Across their chests hung suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattlers, their weapon-mounted PEQ-15 infrared lasers cutting through the dining room smoke in twelve razor-sharp needles of incandescent crimson light:
“FEDERAL INQUEST! GET ON THE FLOOR! HANDS SPREAD WIDE! DO NOT REACH FOR COAT POCKETS! DO NOT MOVE!”
Sylvia Vance was crawling on her hands and knees beneath the table, her South Sea pearls catching on the broken silverware, her mauve dress soaked in turkey grease and gravy:
*“HELP! POLICE! WE’RE BEING ROBBED BY TERRORISTS! MARCUS! ARTHUR!”*
Marcus scrambled backward against the marble sideboard, his hands held up defensively, his midnight-blue suit coated in white plaster dust:
“HOLD YOUR FIRE!” Marcus screamed, his voice cracking into that high, pathetic, undignified pitch of an executive facing a firing squad:
“I AM MARCUS STERLING-VANCE! MY UNCLE IS THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES! YOU HAVE THE WRONG HOUSE! THIS IS AN ILLEGAL ENTRY!”
“Stand down, Vance,” a voice commanded from the shattered doorway.
The twelve tactical operators parted with synchronized, mechanical velocity.
Walking through the pulverized oak…
Her hand-welted leather bridge shoes making a clean, concussive *tack… tack… tack* across the shattered crystal and the spilled wine…
Wearing an immaculate dark-charcoal three-piece suit of English wool beneath an unbuttoned overcoat…
With the gold-and-enamel shield of the **SPECIAL LITIGATION TASK FORCE** pinned to her left lapel, its polished surface catching the green tactical laser beams with cold, unyielding brilliance…
Was Eleanor Mercer-Carter.
Me.
And walking on my left flank, his dress uniform pristine, his hand resting across his service sidearm…
Was Commander Frank Donahue.
And walking on my right flank, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page federal grand jury brief bound with crimson silk ribbon…
Was **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**.
Chief Federal Prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia.
