I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

Then he handed it to the deputy.

“I’d like you to review these before anyone puts her belongings on the street.”

The deputy accepted the folder.

Doug’s face darkened.

“What is that supposed to be?”

Danny looked at him.

“Something you should have thought about before treating people like they didn’t matter.”

The deputy stepped away to examine the documents.

I barely noticed.

All I could think about was the little girl.

She had moved closer to Danny and was now holding his hand.

“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “how old are you?”

“Five.”

“What’s your last name?”

“Carter.”

I looked at Danny.

He understood the question before I asked it.

“She’s my daughter.”

I felt my heart tighten.

“And Jesse?”

Danny lowered his head.

“Jesse is her father.”

The world seemed to disappear around me.

I reached for the porch railing.

Danny immediately stepped forward.

“Mrs. K?”

“My Jesse?”

He nodded.
