I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

“My daddy said you were the lady who gave him a warm place to sleep.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Your daddy?”

Danny’s eyes filled.

“Mrs. K, there’s something you need to know about Jesse.”

Before he could continue, Doug stepped forward.

“Excuse me. Whatever family reunion this is, it can happen somewhere else. We’ve got an eviction to finish.”

Danny slowly stood.

He turned toward Doug.

“You’re Doug Pruitt?”

Doug frowned.

“Who wants to know?”

“My name is Daniel Carter. I believe you remember the woman standing behind me.”

Doug looked at him more carefully.

Then his expression changed.

“Wait. You’re that kid from the gas station?”

Danny nodded.

“The one you dragged out of the storeroom.”

Doug scoffed.

“That was years ago.”

“Six years.”

“Whatever. This isn’t your business.”

Danny glanced at the sheriff’s deputy.

“Actually, I think it is.”

He reached into the back of the truck and removed a large document folder.
