I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

The next morning, Lily came into the kitchen wearing pink pajamas.

“Grandma?”

I nearly dropped my coffee cup.

She looked at me shyly.

“Can I call you that?”

I knelt down.

“If you want to, sweetheart.”

She smiled.

“Daddy said my grandma makes good pancakes.”

I laughed through tears.

“He told you that?”

“Uh-huh.”

I opened the refrigerator.

“Then I suppose I have a reputation to protect.”

I made pancakes the way I used to make them for Jesse.

Lily sat at the kitchen table, watching carefully as I flipped them.

Danny stood near the doorway.

For a moment, I could almost imagine Jesse sitting there, stealing pieces of pancake before breakfast was ready.

When I placed Lily’s plate in front of her, she took one bite.

Then she smiled.

“Daddy was right.”

I looked at Danny.

He wiped his eyes.

And for the first time in years, our kitchen sounded like a family again.
