PART 16
Two years after the dinner party, Maya started kindergarten.
On the first day, she wore a purple backpack.
She held Danielle’s hand with one hand.
Mine with the other.
At the classroom door, she stopped.
“Daddy.”
“What?”
“If somebody tells me I can’t eat until I finish work, do I tell the teacher?”
My chest tightened.
“Yes.”
“Even if it’s a grown-up?”
“Especially if it’s a grown-up.”
She nodded.
Then she looked at Danielle.
“And nobody can take my papers?”
Danielle smiled.
“No one gets to take your things to control you.”
Maya seemed satisfied.
Then she ran into class.
I stood beside Danielle.
“She still remembers everything.”
Danielle nodded.
“So do we.”
I looked at her.
“Do you think she’ll be okay?”
“She is okay.”
I frowned.
Danielle continued.
“Okay doesn’t mean forgetting.”
“It means knowing what happened wasn’t normal.”
That was something I had taken too long to learn.
