“What clinic?”
“I don’t know the name. It was on Highway 33.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Sadie looked frightened.
“Because Dad said not to.”
I tried to keep my voice calm.
“What happened there?”
“He told me we were going to see someone because I kept complaining about my stomach. They did an examination and an ultrasound.”
My heart began pounding.
“They did an ultrasound?”
She nodded.
“Then a doctor came in and talked to Dad. I couldn’t hear everything, but he said I needed to go to a hospital.”
I stared at her.
“What did your father say?”
Sadie wiped her cheek.
“He got angry. He asked how much it would cost and whether there was another way to wait.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Did the doctor say it was serious?”
“I think so.”
“What happened after that?”
“Dad took me outside. In the car, he told me not to tell you.”
