Sadie looked at him.
“I was scared, Dad.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t. I thought if I told Mom, you’d be angry with me. I thought I had to choose between getting help and keeping you happy.”
Curtis covered his face.
Sadie continued.
“I don’t want to be responsible for your secrets anymore.”
He nodded.
“You’re right.”
She stood.
“I need time.”
And she walked away.
I watched from the hallway.
I didn’t stop her.
She had finally said what she needed to say.
Part 17: A Different Kind of Future

Curtis and I separated.
Our attorney helped us establish a financial accounting, protect the remaining savings, and arrange repayment of money that had been diverted from the family accounts.
We also made sure Sady’s medical follow-up care and insurance coverage were secure.
Curtis began attending counseling and a financial recovery program.
I didn’t know whether he would change.
