I closed my eyes.
“Thank God.”
“Sadie will need follow-up imaging and appointments, but we expect her to recover well. The ovary was preserved, and that’s encouraging.”
I sat down on the edge of the bed.
For the first time since that terrible night, I allowed myself to cry from relief.
When Sadie woke, I told her.
“It’s benign, sweetheart.”
She stared at me.
“So I’m okay?”
“You’re going to recover.”
She began crying.
I held her carefully, avoiding her surgical dressing.
“Can I go back to school?”
“Not yet. You need time to heal.”
She smiled weakly.
“Can I at least have pizza?”
I laughed.
“We’ll see what the doctor says.”
It was the first time in weeks that she sounded like herself.
And I promised myself that I would never again allow anyone to make her feel guilty for needing help.
