“Where is she?”
“She’s in recovery.”
“Is she okay?”
I looked at him.
“She’s alive. The surgery went well.”
He exhaled.
“Good.”
Then he noticed the papers in my hand.
“What are those?”
“The hospital records. And the insurance cancellation notice.”
His expression changed.
“Why are you digging through financial paperwork right now?”
“Because our daughter was denied the care she needed while you were telling me she was pretending.”
“I didn’t deny her anything.”
“You took her to a clinic. They told you she needed further evaluation. You brought her home and told her to keep quiet.”
“I was trying to avoid unnecessary panic.”
“She was in pain, Curtis.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“Paula, you don’t understand the situation.”
“Then explain it.”
He glanced toward the corridor.
“Not here.”
“Why not? You’re not afraid of Sadie hearing you. You already made her carry this secret.”
His jaw tightened.
“Keep your voice down.”
