Chapter 1: My Brother and I Were Adopted h007

Beside Admiral Mercer walked **Major General Michael Grant**, Deputy Director of Special Operations Command, and **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**, Chief Federal Prosecutor and Special Admiralty Master, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page federal grand jury indictment stamped with the raised red-wax dry seal of the **DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY // SPECIAL ADMIRALTY CHANCERY**.

And leaping from the threshold of the lead tactical helicopter onto the hardwood floorboards, his massive golden head held high, his amber eyes scanning Arthur’s throat with silent, predatory discipline…

Was Barnaby.

An eighty-pound retired naval working dog.

A Belgian Malinois whose dark muzzle had tracked military ordnance across sixty miles of subterranean bedrock.

Barnaby trotted straight across the study, stopped beside my boots, sat squarely upon his haunches in textbook mechanical symmetry, and let out a soft, contented sigh as his heavy golden tail gave one single, definitive thump against the timber:

*thump.*

I dropped my hand, scratching behind his ears: “Good boy, Barnaby.

The watch holds true.”

And walking through the shattered French doors behind Uncle David, his six-foot-two frame straight as an eight-gauge naval transit rod, wearing a dark-navy woolen officer’s chore coat over his civilian clothes, his sea-glass eyes blazing with an unyielding, beautiful, eternal light…

Was **Simon**.

My twin brother.

Simon stopped dead in the center of the study.

He looked at the silver-framed photograph in my hand.

He looked at my face.

Twenty years of shared childhood trauma, twenty years of being told we were worthless orphans, and the overwhelming, miraculous reality of recovered honor collapsed into a single, breathless nod between twin brothers who had survived the dark:

“Mason,” Simon whispered, his deep baritone trembling slightly:

“The line is plumb.”

“The line is plumb, Simon,” I answered, holding out my hand.

Simon crossed the room in two strides, his strong, calloused hand gripping mine with that unbreakable, eighty-year family grip that had linked our grandfather to our uncle and down to us.

Vice Admiral David Mercer mounted the two steps into the study.

The seventy-four-year-old four-star Admiral snapped his polished leather bridge shoes together with an audible *CRACK* against the hardwood floorboards, turned forty-five degrees toward Simon and me, and brought his white-gloved right hand up to an unyielding, razor-sharp military salute:

“**Custodians on deck,**” Admiral Mercer boomed across the house.

His voice was sixty decibels of mountain quarry explosive, reverberating through the Great Falls valley like heavy naval artillery:

“Master Engineer Simon Arthur Mercer.”

“Master Architect Mason Eleanor Mercer.”

“The twenty-year covert domestic surveillance watch is certified.”

“The sixty-billion-dollar Swiss attachment is executed in Zurich.”

“The sovereign perimeter of Valve Station Ten is secured under Title Fifty War Powers.”

“And Conduit Ten… holds true.”

Simon and I returned Uncle David’s salute with textbook, eighty-year mechanical symmetry:

“At ease, Uncle David.”

Arthur Sterling-Vance did not dive for cover.

Even in the presence of twelve tactical operators and the Chief of Naval Operations, the former Chief Justice of the United States stood tall, his black judicial silk robes hanging from his shoulders, his manicured hands resting upon his cane:

“David,” Arthur Vance said softly, his voice that deep, velvet cello that had shaped forty years of American law:

“You have committed fourteen separate capital felonies under Title Eighteen by breaching a private residence with an armed special warfare detachment.”

Arthur Vance pointed his gold signet ring toward Uncle David:

“The statutory seventy-year spendthrift restriction on Arthur Mercer’s charter expires at midnight tonight!

Julian Vance filed the adverse default quitclaim deed in Richmond three hours ago!

Under Article Three of the United States Constitution, the military has zero jurisdiction over a civil property conveyance!”

United States Attorney Marcus Cooper stepped forward, opening the four-hundred-page federal grand jury indictment:

*THUD.*

The heavy volume struck Kenneth’s drafting table, pulverizing Julian Vance’s dropped gold fountain pen into bent brass shards:

`CRIMINAL DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON & AGGRAVATED CHILD EXPLOITATION`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN ESTATE`
`v.

CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR STERLING-VANCE, JULIAN ARTHUR STERLING-VANCE,`
`BEATRICE KELLEY, AND ROSELLA STERLING-VANCE.`
`CHARGES: EIGHTY-FOUR COUNTS OF CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TO USURP SOVEREIGN DEFENSE BEDROCK (18 U.S.C. § 2384),`
`UNLAWFUL CONCEALMENT OF COMMISSIONED LINEAL TITLE (18 U.S.C. § 1343),`
`SABOTAGE OF STRATEGIC DEFENSE MIGRATION INFRASTRUCTURE (42 U.S.C. § 2274),`
`AND SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TO USURP SOVEREIGN ADMIRALTY ESCROWS.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`

“Arthur Sterling-Vance,” Marcus Cooper stated, every syllable dropping like an eighty-pound iron anvil into thirty fathoms of sub-zero ocean water:

“Under Section Fourteen-B of the **1944 Mercer Sovereign Lineal Charter**: eighty years ago, Arthur Mercer Senior decreed that if an adverse party attempts to fraudulently conceal, orphan, or extinguish the living lineal bloodline of the master surveyor on a sovereign homestead… every asset, every commercial share, every offshore account, and sixty billion dollars in carried defense reserves reverts in absolute, un-divided fee simple unto the surviving lineal heirs!”

Cooper slammed his palm onto the brief:

“Unto Simon Arthur Mercer and Mason Eleanor Mercer!”
