Chapter 1: My Brother and I Were Adopted h007

I tilted my head toward the leaded-glass windows overlooking the Potomac River bluffs:

**“And third: you forgot that when an auditor issues an emergency distress signal on Conduit Ten… the entire United States Navy answers the call.”**

*KABOOOOM.*

The entire western timber ridge along the Potomac River gorge did not merely shake from thunder.

The autumn sky tore open in an apocalyptic, concussive roar as three dark-olive **Sikorsky MH-60M Black Hawks** of **DEVGRU Red Squadron** flared into a tactical hover fifty feet above the roof of 1404 Elmridge Lane!

*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*

The forty-thousand-lumen searchlights pinned the study windows in blinding, incandescent daylight!

The massive twin-turbine rotor downwash hit the house like an eighty-knot hurricane, blowing the heavy velvet brocade drapes straight into the room, shattering the leaded-glass transoms into fifty thousand glittering diamonds, and blowing Arthur Vance’s Swiss wire agreements straight off his tablet!

*SCREAMS-PANTING-TERROR.*

Beatrice shrieked hysterically, falling onto her hands and knees among the broken glass, clutching her hair as the violent downdraft coated her designer clothes in plaster dust:

*“ARTHUR!

WHAT IS THAT?!

WHAT DID HE DO?!”*

Four tactical fast-ropes dropped down to the rear terrace with a heavy, concussive slap:

*thud-thud-thud-thud.*

Twelve operators from the **United States Navy Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU Red Squadron)** and the **United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG)** poured down the lines in fluid, synchronized mechanical velocity!

In sterile dark-charcoal Nomex drysuits, Level IV boron-carbide plate carriers, and Ops-Core ballistic helmets with four-tube panoramic night-vision brackets folded onto their foreheads, they swept through the shattered French doors of the parlor into the hallway!

Across their chests hung suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattlers, their weapon-mounted PEQ-15 infrared lasers cutting through the drifting plaster dust in twelve razor-sharp needles of incandescent crimson light:

“FEDERAL INQUEST!

CORDON ESTABLISHED!

ALL OCCUPANTS DROP YOUR WEAPONS FLAT ON THE FLOORBOARDS!

DO NOT REACH FOR POCKETS!”

Julian Vance panicked.

Driven by the frantic, cornered terror of a corporate embezzler whose entire offshore empire was collapsing beneath his feet, he attempted to pivot his weapon toward my chest—

*CLACK.*

He never completed the draw.

Two DEVGRU operators stepped through the study doorway in fluid, synchronized precision:

Their gloved hands intercepted Julian’s wrist in mid-draw, twisting his forearm ninety degrees until the radius and ulna bones compressed violently against the median nerve cluster:

*CRACK.*

With two textbook mechanical pivots, the two-hundred-and-twenty-pound operators spun Julian one hundred and eighty degrees against Kenneth’s heavy chestnut drafting table, driving his face down onto the wood with four hundred pounds of downward kinetic leverage:

*SLAM.*

His cheek struck the timber, his gold Montblanc pen snapping beneath his chest, his bespoke silk tie soaked in the spilled ink from the broken well:

*SNAP-SNAP.*

A pair of heavy-duty, double-locking, high-security stainless-steel military transport restraints ratcheted around Julian Vance’s wrists with two sharp, definitive snaps that sounded like twin rifle shots across the room:

*SNAP.*

A second set of chains clamped around his ankles—the identical stainless-steel irons used for capital traitors at the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth:

*SNAP-CLINK.*

Beside him, two female federal marshals pinned Beatrice to the floorboards, her screaming silenced as heavy transport irons slammed shut around her manicured wrists:

*SNAP-CLINK.*

*TACK.*

*TACK.*

*TACK.*

The sound of hand-welted naval leather bridge boots stepping through the pulverized glass of the hallway was unhurried, rhythmic, and concussive.

Every step fell with the mechanical, heavy cadence of a naval battery firing across an enclosed harbor.

Walking through the breach behind the tactical stack…

Wearing his full service dress blue uniform, his four solid-silver cast stars catching the emergency searchlights, his broad chest covered in ten dense rows of decorations including the Navy Cross with gold star, the Silver Star with two oak leaf clusters, and the Distinguished Service Medal…

Was our maternal grand-uncle.

**Vice Admiral David Mercer**.

Seventy-four years old.

Chief of Naval Operations.

Surgeon General Emeritus of the United States Navy.

Arthur Mercer Senior’s surviving younger brother.
