I used my inhaler and waited until my breathing settled.
Before continuing, I stopped at a twenty-four-hour pharmacy.
“Do you need diapers?”
She nodded reluctantly.
“And wipes. Maybe some formula for Oliver.”
“Anything else?”
“Please don’t spend too much.”
I smiled.
“These little guys haven’t learned how to manage a budget yet.”
Fifteen minutes later, we arrived at Sophie’s house.
She opened the door wearing slippers and immediately embraced her sister.
“Thank goodness you’re here!”
Then she noticed the shopping bags.
“You bought all this?”
“Just a few essentials.”
“Please let me pay you back.”
“Don’t worry about it.”
Emily touched my arm.
“I won’t forget what you did tonight.”
“Just get some rest,” I told her. “That’s all the thanks I need.”
I left my phone number with the sisters in case they needed anything.
Then I drove home, convinced our paths would never cross again.
