At two in the morning, after finishing a grueling twelve-hour emergency room shift, I spotted a young woman sitting outside the hospital with two newborn babies.

She gave a bitter little smile.

“Apparently.”

As we drove, she described the argument outside the hospital.

She’d told Nathan she couldn’t keep managing everything alone.

He’d responded by telling her to find someone else who wanted to listen to her problems.

Then he’d driven away.

“Emily, leaving you stranded without your belongings wasn’t acceptable,” I said gently.

“He was just exhausted.”

Those words sounded painfully familiar.

“My mother used to make that excuse for my father.” Birthdayparty planning

She looked at me.

“Was your father like Nathan?”

“He had a temper. He’d upset everyone, and my mother would spend the rest of the evening explaining why it wasn’t his fault.”

“Did he ever change?”
I paused.

“No.”

A tight sensation suddenly developed in my chest.

I pulled into a well-lit parking lot.

“Are you okay?” Emily asked.

“Just my asthma. Give me a moment.”
