After Getting Out of Pr*son, I Had Nowhere to Go, So an Elderly Woman Hired Me

“Because a PI’s file belongs to the client who paid for it.”

“And I’d like to know if the client was Brian.”

“Or Nicole.”

“Why does it matter?”

Samuel took off his reading glasses.

“Because married people who steal together usually stop trusting each other around year three.”

I made dinner.

Pot roast. Her late husband’s recipe, from a card in the drawer.

We ate at the kitchen table.

Halfway through, Dorothy set down her fork.

“You went to see Samuel.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“And there’s a drain in the floor of his conference room.”

“He bought the building from a dentist who went to pr*son for billing fr*ud. Samuel was the one who found it. He likes the drain. He says it reminds him what the work is for.”
