« Oh, darling, » I said, opening the door. « I think she’ll be speechless. »
The next morning, I woke up to the sound of someone screaming.
« BUT WHAT IS THIS?! »
I immediately recognized Elaine’s voice.
« She’s really, really angry! »
A moment later, Owen burst into my room. « Mom! Grandma’s outside! »
I stretched and yawned. « Oh really? That’s great. »
He was practically jumping up and down. « She’s really, really angry! »
« Well, we’d better go see what’s causing all this commotion. »
I put on my bathrobe, poured myself a cup of coffee, and then went out onto our terrace with Owen.
« You can’t judge my house today! »
Several neighbors had already gathered along the sidewalk.
Elaine stood in her driveway, wearing a pink bathrobe, waving her arms.
At that moment, a car displaying the neighborhood Halloween contest logo pulled up.
Three judges came out, carrying notepads. Elaine rushed towards them.
