« But she said she was helping me! »
« Grandma won’t get angry, will she? »
« I know, darling. And what she did was really wrong. »
« Why would she have wanted to scare me? »
I explained to her that Elaine was upset because of the decorating contest.
Owen looked down at his hands. « But I wasn’t trying to beat her. I just wanted people to see what I had done. »
It kind of broke my heart.
« I have an idea. »
« I know. And you’re going to put all these decorations back in place. Every last one. »
He hesitated. « Won’t Grandma get angry? »
I smiled. « Probably. But I have an idea. »
I leaned towards him.
« Owen, have I ever told you what I used to do on Halloween when I was your age? »
I whispered my plan to him.
He shook his head.
« Well, we had a very special tradition for people who played mean tricks on us. »
