« They don’t realize how much effort I put into my decorations! »
I shook my head.
An idea came to my mind.
« Owen wasn’t even trying to beat you. He was proud of having made something himself. »
Elaine crossed her arms. « If he can’t handle a little Halloween fun, maybe he’s too young for the competition. »
I looked at the sheet, then at its overpriced decorations at the neighbors’ house.
Suddenly, an idea came to me.
« Perhaps he’s too young. »
« You know what, Elaine? You’re right about one thing. »
She looked suspicious.
« What is it? »
« Halloween should be fun. »
I turned towards the house, smiling to myself.
« She was helping me! »
And for the first time that evening, I was really looking forward to Halloween.
The next morning, I sat down with Owen and told him the truth.
« Was that Grandma, the ghost? »
He looked at me, incredulous.
