I put a laxative in my husband’s coffee before he left to see his mistress… but what happened next was worse than I imagined

Part 2: The Silent House
The high from my petty revenge lasted exactly through my second margarita. Sitting with my friends, laughing about how the corporate titan had been brought to his knees by a double dose of over-the-counter laxatives, felt liberating. But as the clock struck 3:00 PM, a strange, gnawing anxiety settled in my chest.

I cut the afternoon short, waved goodbye to the girls, and drove back home.

When I pulled into the driveway, the house looked entirely deserted. The front door was unlocked, just as I had left it. I stepped into the foyer, expecting to hear him groaning from the bedroom, or perhaps shouting furious threats at me for ruining his grand romantic day.

Instead, the silence was deafening.

“Mark?” I called out, my voice echoing off the walls. No response.

I walked up the stairs, my heart beginning to thud against my ribs. I checked the upstairs bathroom first. The door was wide open. The room was clean, but on the counter sat his phone, completely shattered as if it had been thrown against the tile floor in a fit of rage.

Then I noticed the trail of muddy footprints leading out of the bathroom, down the hallway, and straight into our home office. I followed them, pushing the office door open. The room was a disaster zone. The desk drawers were pulled out, papers were scattered everywhere, and the small wall safe behind the painting was gaping wide open.

It was entirely empty.

Part 3: The True Strategy
I dropped my purse, scrambling through the scattered papers on the floor. Mark hadn’t just taken his passport and emergency cash; he had taken the hard drive containing our joint property deeds, the stock certificates left to me by my late father, and the signed authorization forms for our shared investment accounts.

This hadn’t been an ordinary affair. The laxative hadn’t stopped a date; it had triggered a panic that forced him to accelerate a plan he had been cooking up for months.

Suddenly, the shattered phone on the bathroom counter vibrated violently. It was still functional enough to light up. I picked it up, the screen spiderwebbed with cracks, and read the preview of a new text message that had just come through.

It wasn’t from Caroline the secretary. It was from a contact saved simply as The Broker.

“The offshore wire transfer is pending your final physical signature at the airport branch. You have 45 minutes before the flight to Zurich boards. Caroline is already at the gate with the tickets.”

The “meeting” he was dressing up for wasn’t a hotel rendezvous. He was leaving the country today, embezzling everything we owned, and pinning the blame on a messy divorce timeline. The laxative hadn’t just ruined his stomach—it had ruined his schedule, delaying him just enough to give me a fighting chance.
