Some products may contain familiar ingredients and provide transparent information. Others may be far more difficult for an ordinary consumer
to evaluate.
That is why experts commonly encourage people to look beyond the front of the package.
A responsible evaluation should consider the complete ingredient list, the amount of each ingredient, available scientific evidence, the manufacturer’s reputation, possible side effects and potential interactions with medications or other supplements.
Even when an individual ingredient has been studied, another question remains: does the evidence actually support the dose and combination contained in the product being sold?
A company may highlight research involving one ingredient while selling a formulation containing several substances in
different quantities.
The existence of scientific research somewhere in the marketing material does not automatically prove that the finished product itself will deliver the promised result.
