While I Was Pregnant with Our Twins, I Stayed Silent as My Husband’s Mistress Took Credit for Saving His Parents’ Home.

It’s what happened on that porch after everyone else had gone.

Evelyn took my hands in both of hers, her eyes swollen from crying, and asked me the only question that mattered.

“Why would you do all of that for us, after how our son treated you?”

I looked down at Theo and Chloe in the stroller.

“Because you’re their grandparents,” I said. “And they’re going to grow up knowing exactly where they come from, and exactly how much they’re loved.”

Walter and Evelyn chose us that day, and they never once wavered.

They had lost a son to his own worst self, and they refused to lose their grandchildren too.

Evelyn moved a crib into the sunny room that had once been Preston’s, and painted it herself, slowly, over a week, humming the whole time.

Walter built a wooden gate at the top of the stairs with his own hands, measuring it three times, the way careful men do when something precious is finally coming home.
