7. Sleeping Position During Pregnancy
Pregnancy changes the body’s shape, balance, and pressure distribution, which can make comfortable sleep more challenging.
Side sleeping is often recommended as pregnancy progresses, particularly during the second and third trimesters.
Sleeping on the side with the knees slightly bent may help reduce pressure on the back and improve comfort.
A pillow between the knees, beneath the abdomen, or behind the back may provide additional support.
However, recommendations about sleeping position depend on the stage of
pregnancy.
As pregnancy advances, going to sleep on the back may place pressure on major blood vessels. Pregnant people should follow their obstetric clinician’s advice about safe sleep positioning, especially later in pregnancy.
If you wake up on your back, do not panic. Simply turn onto your side and settle back to sleep.
The goal is to establish a comfortable and appropriate position without creating unnecessary anxiety about normal movements during sleep.
