“WHEN MY DAUGHTER’S MMA BOYFRIEND SENT HER TO THE ER, I WENT STRAIGHT TO HIS GYM. HIS COACH LOOKED AT MY GRAY BEARD AND LAUGHED, “GET OUT OF HERE, GRANDPA, UNLESS YOU WANT TO LEAVE IN A BODY BAG.”….007

I did not draw a weapon.

I reached up with both hands, unbuttoning the faded red-and-black wool flannel shirt, and slipped the heavy garment off my shoulders.

I draped the flannel over the ropes of the ring:

Beneath the flannel, I was not wearing an old man’s thermal undershirt.

I wore an immaculate, tailored **Navy Auxiliary Officer Service Uniform**—the midnight-blue wool jacket pristine, the solid-silver cast eagles of a **Full Colonel in the United States Marine Corps** gleaming on my shoulder epaulets, five dense rows of combat decorations covering my left breast: the Navy Cross with gold star, the Silver Star with two oak leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit with Combat ‘V’ device, the Purple Heart with three clusters, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Pinned to my left lapel was an unpolished, circular piece of hand-machined naval brass: an antique surveyor’s transit pin, its miniature brass vernier scale etched with micro-graduations that looked like an artillery fire-control dial:

`USN-44-MERCER-CONDUIT-TEN`
`MASTER CHANCERY AUDITOR: COLONEL CLINTON ARTHUR MERCER`
`COMMISSION: DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL INFRASTRUCTURE INTERDICTION`
`UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS & NAVAL SPECIAL WARFARE`

Strapped to my left wrist, advancing with that clean, unbroken cadence:

*tack… tack… tack…*

Was my father Arthur Mercer Senior’s restored **1956 Admiralty Gold Chronometer**.

Kovacs’s jaw dropped so violently his tongue clipped his front teeth:

“Colonel…?”

Kovacs whispered, his voice cracking into that thin, pathetic squeak:

“A… a Marine Colonel…?!”

“My name is not Clint the grandfather, Coach Kovacs,” I spoke softly into the silent gym.

My voice had no volume.

Yet it filled that four-thousand-square-foot warehouse with forty decibels of compressed, unyielding polar diamond:

“My name is **Colonel Clinton Arthur Mercer**.”

“Director of Special Infrastructure Interdiction.”

“And the young woman your nephew put in the intensive care unit two hours ago…”

I took two slow, measured steps toward the cage:

“…is not a clumsy girl who fell down the stairs.”

“Her name is **Captain Marcy Eleanor Mercer**.”

“Chief Fiduciary Auditor for the United States Navy.”

“And the four-hundred-acre compound your criminal syndicate operates on the shores of Lake Erie…?”

I bared my teeth in a razor-thin, cold line of white bone:

“…sits directly atop **Valve Station Ten // Lake Erie Continental Aperture**.”

CHAPTER 2: THE REVERSE PERSPECTIVE OF AN EMBED

Dustin’s hands froze on the zipper of his gym bag.

The twenty-two-year-old rising MMA prospect—the kid who had broken my daughter’s ribs, shattered her orbital bone, and stood over her bed in the dark telling her that his family was untouchable—looked at the five rows of medals on my chest as if a ghost had just walked out of a crypt.

“Marcy…?”

Dustin stammered, his teeth chattering in audible clicks:

“Marcy was a receptionist at an architectural firm in Lakewood!

She drove a ten-year-old Honda!

She had no family connections!”

“Marcy was an active deep-cover naval intelligence auditor, Dustin,” Colonel Clinton Mercer answered, every syllable falling like an eighty-pound iron anvil dropped into thirty fathoms of sub-zero ocean water:

“She was deployed to this sector fourteen months ago under Title Fifty National Security Secrecy.”

“Because twelve years ago, naval counter-intelligence uncovered a sixty-billion-dollar shadow factoring syndicate operating out of Vaduz, Liechtenstein.”

“A syndicate called **The Valkyrie Trust**.”

“Operated by your biological uncle: former **Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance**.”

The air in the gym evacuated with the concussive, acoustic violence of a submarine ballast tank failing under eighty atmospheres of pressure.

Coach Rex Kovacs backed away until his spine slammed into the canvas corner post of the ring:

*THUD.*

His hand slipped completely off the Glock in his waistband:

“Chief Justice Vance…?”

Kovacs gasped, his face turning an apocalyptic, curdled shade of sour skim milk:

“Arthur Vance is Dustin’s great-uncle!

But… he’s the most powerful jurist in Washington!

He controls the Fourth and Fifth Circuits!

He holds sixty billion dollars in Swiss mezzanine bonds!”

“Eighty years ago, in nineteen-forty-four,” I continued, stepping toward the center of the matted floor:

“My father—**Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior**—was commissioned by the Department of the Navy under Title 50 War Powers to bore forty miles of subterranean pre-Cambrian crystalline schist beneath North America.”

“He built **Conduit Ten**.”

“The classified, electromagnetic-shielded, pressurized analog command artery running eighty feet beneath this very gym, connecting the naval communications redoubts at Great Lakes Naval Training Center straight into the nuclear retaliatory crypts beneath the Supreme Court of the United States.”

“Inside that conduit were placed forty-eight titanium transit cylinders containing the physical, analog mechanical targeting release matrices for our nation’s strategic nuclear deterrent.”

“No digital hack could touch them.”

“No foreign satellite could blind them.”

“They are physical, un-hackable, eternal.”

I pointed my bare right index finger straight down through the rubber mats:

“And this building—Apex Combat Systems on West 5th—sits directly atop **Valve Station Ten**.”

“The primary North-Central overland surface access hatch, hydraulic ventilation manifold, and emergency cryogenic staging terminal for Conduit Ten.”

“Under Section Fourteen-B of the **1944 Mercer Sovereign Lineal Charter**:”

“The underlying fee-simple title to forty miles of continental defense bedrock belongs exclusively to Arthur Mercer’s direct biological descendants who hold active master chancery commissions.”
