There were also lighter memories from those years. Schwabe recalled the ordinary details that existed behind the enormous performances and public appearances, including the amount of time spent waiting during costume changes. Such recollections offered a glimpse of a relationship that existed away from the carefully produced images audiences normally saw.
Swift later appeared to acknowledge the importance of her former teacher in an unexpected way. When she appeared in the 2010 romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, her character’s teacher was named Mr. Schwabe. Reports about their relationship have described the name as a tribute to the teacher who had made an impression on her during her school years.
Schwabe’s life, however, was much larger than his connection to one famous former student. His family emphasized his dedication to teaching and the many students he encountered throughout his career. Long after leaving the classroom, he continued to be remembered by former students and relatives as a person who cared deeply about education and about helping younger people.
His health deteriorated significantly in the period before his death. In early June, his daughter publicly explained that his condition had declined rapidly and that he had entered hospice care. Schwabe had been battling metastatic kidney cancer, a serious illness that had increasingly affected his health.
