Common mistake to avoid: Don’t stuff the space with cleaning supplies before checking for water lines. A leak behind stored items can go unnoticed for weeks.

Step 2 — Decide How to Use It
What to do: Match the space to its purpose.
How to do it:
If it’s service access: keep it clear and label the shutoff valve so anyone can find it in an emergency.
If it’s storage: add vertical dividers for baking sheets, cutting boards, and platters. Slim cabinets of 3 to 6 inches are ideal for these.
If it’s a filler: leave it alone, or ask your installer whether it can be converted into a pull-out.
Common mistake to avoid: Don’t remove a panel or shelf without checking what it supports. Some narrow cabinets are structural.
