This may suggest that silverfish are associated with stored food, but it is important to distinguish between what

an image illustrates and what it proves.

Silverfish can consume a variety of carbohydrate-containing materials, and some may feed on stored plant products. Nevertheless, they are not the principal pest responsible for most infestations of dry breakfast cereals.

Other insects, including pantry moths and certain beetles, are more commonly associated with infestations of stored grains, cereals, flour, and similar foods.

If insects appear inside a package of oats, the species should be identified before assuming that silverfish are responsible.

How to protect dry foods
Store oats, flour, rice, cereal, pasta, and other dry foods in clean, tightly sealed containers.

Inspect packages for tears, unusual residue, webbing, larvae, or visible insects.

Avoid leaving food packages open in cupboards, and clean up spills promptly.

If a package contains insects or signs of infestation, seal it and discard it if necessary. Inspect nearby packages to determine whether the problem has spread.
