Several environmental conditions can make a home more attractive.

Moisture and humidity
Some silverfish species thrive in humid environments.

Bathrooms with poor ventilation, leaking pipes, condensation, and damp storage areas can provide favorable conditions.

Moisture may also accumulate beneath sinks, behind appliances, or

around plumbing penetrations.

These locations offer both shelter and access to water.

Reducing unnecessary moisture can make some indoor environments less suitable for silverfish, especially moisture-associated species.

However, different species have different requirements. Some, including long-tailed silverfish, can tolerate drier indoor conditions and may spread through living rooms, bedrooms, offices, and storage areas.

Consequently, lowering bathroom humidity alone may not solve every silverfish problem.

Darkness and undisturbed spaces
Silverfish are generally more active at night and often hide during the day.

They can shelter beneath furniture, behind baseboards, inside wall gaps, beneath stored paper, and within cardboard boxes.

A home can contain many suitable hiding places even when it is regularly cleaned.
