At the opening ceremony, I stood beside her in dress uniform. Survivors walked through the front doors for the first time. Soldiers from my own base showed up to volunteer without being asked twice. General Ashgrove arrived by wheelchair, his health failing fast by then, his pride still fully intact. He cried when Simone handed him the ceremonial scissors to cut the ribbon himself.
This time, the cameras rolling outside captured hope instead of scandal.
Part Six: The First Shot
As the sun dropped behind the tree line, Simone leaned against my shoulder and touched the silver locket still resting at her throat.
“I thought calling you that night made me weak,” she whispered. “I thought I’d failed at handling it myself.”
I took her hand in mine.
“No, sweetheart,” I told her. “Calling for backup was never weakness. It was the first shot of the whole thing.”

For the first time in years, my daughter looked like herself again.
Not untouched. Not unscarred. But alive, and free, and considerably more dangerous now than the powerful family that had once tried to quietly bury her in a guest house nobody outside their gates was ever supposed to see.
The Ashgroves had chosen the wrong daughter to break.
