The only sound left was the sixty-cycle hum of the air ducts and the rhythmic *tack… tack… tack* of my grandfather’s chronometer watch on my wrist.
Across the aisle, Serena Cole took half a step toward the spectator benches, her eyes darting toward the exit doors:
“Serena Cole,” Rachel Vance’s voice rang out like an iron bell: “If you take one more step toward that door, the federal marshals stationed in the corridor will execute the Title Eighteen material witness warrant currently resting on the bench.”
Serena froze as if an invisible steel cable had snapped tight around her collarbones.
Rachel stepped forward to the podium.
She did not open a standard domestic relations litigation brief.
She opened the four-hundred-page dark-blue vellum portfolio, lifted an antique, four-inch-long, solid-titanium surveyor’s compass transit key from the velvet lining, and laid it flat atop the wood:
*CLINK.*
The heavy titanium metal struck the mahogany with a dull, subterranean ring that vibrated through the floorboards, causing the water carafe on the bench to chime in harmonic resonance:
*clink… clink… clink.*
“Your Honor,” Rachel Vance stated, every syllable dropping like an un-appealable epitaph:
“The respondent, Adriana Eleanor Mercer-Vance, does not seek a routine dissolution of marriage today.”
“The respondent moves this Court for the immediate, armed sequestration of all commercial assets, all factoring lines, and all offshore liquidity vehicles held under the names of Marcus Vance, Serena Cole, and SC Strategic Consulting.”
“On the grounds of Capital High Treason under Article Three, Section Three of the United States Constitution…”
Rachel pointed her gold pen straight at Marcus’s throat:
“…and the premeditated theft of Sovereign Defense Infrastructure under Title Fifty National Security Secrecy.”

CHAPTER 6: THE TWIST OF THE SURVEYOR’S DIE
Marcus let out an un-human, animalistic shriek:
“SHE’S INSANE! SHE’S A COMMON SURGICAL NURSE WHO DOESN’T UNDERSTAND FINANCIAL INSTRUMENTS! ARTHUR, TELL THE JUDGE! I EARNED THAT MONEY! I AM A GENERAL PARTNER AT STERLING-VANCE!”
“You are not a general partner at Sterling-Vance, Marcus,” I spoke across the center aisle.
My voice had no microphone.
Yet it filled that high-ceilinged courtroom with forty decibels of pure, unyielding, polar diamond:
“You were an employee.”
“And at eight-fifteen this morning… the board of directors held an emergency extraordinary meeting at our headquarters on LaSalle Street.”
Marcus bared his teeth, his face turning an apocalyptic, curdled shade of un-cured limestone:
“What board meeting?! I hold the controlling voting proxy!”
I reached into my grandfather’s tweed jacket pocket.
I pulled out a small, circular, hand-machined piece of tarnished naval ordnance brass:
The master **1944 United States Navy Admiralty Foundation Die**—the physical die used by Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior to stamp the red wax on the original wartime sovereign deeds eighty years ago:
*CLINK.*
I laid the heavy brass die flat atop the counsel table beside the titanium key:
“You didn’t hold the proxy, Marcus.”
“My grandfather Arthur Mercer created the holding vessel that capitalized Sterling-Vance in nineteen-eighty-four.”
“An account called **The Mercer-Sterling Sovereign Sanctuary Trust**.”
“Under Clause Fourteen of the Master Founding Codicil…”
Judge Simmons leaned forward, slamming his gavel onto the bench with the force of an eighty-ton iron dead-weight:
*KABOOOOM.*
“…ANY ASSET, ANY DIVERTED CONTRACT, AND ANY SEDITIOUS EQUITY FUNNELED THROUGH SC STRATEGIC CONSULTING BY ANY MARITAL FIDUCIARY… REVERTS IN ABSOLUTE FEE SIMPLE UNTO THE SOLE SURVIVING DIRECT LINEAL HEIRS OF ARTHUR MERCER SENIOR.”
