The moment the nurse carried my newborn son into the recovery room, my mother recoiled as though she had seen something shameful. “We will never accept a child with no father,” she said….007

CHAPTER 2: THE FORGED DIVIDEND

Thomas Vance found his voice, but it had lost its booming boardroom resonance. It sounded paper-thin, raspy, like dry straw scraping against a cellar wall:

“Julian… Mr. Mercer… please. There has been a catastrophic misunderstanding.”

Thomas raised one trembling, manicured hand, trying to reassemble his fractured dignity:

“We had no idea. Chloe never told us. She kept your relationship entirely secret from the family. If we had known that the child was yours—that a Mercer was the father—we would have arrived with flowers! We would have hosted a formal announcement at the Houston Petroleum Club! We were simply concerned about our daughter’s moral reputation and the stability of Vance Development Group!”

“Her moral reputation?” Julian asked softly.

The word dropped like an iron depth-charge into fifty fathoms of dark water:

“You didn’t come to this recovery suite to protect her reputation, Thomas.”

Julian stepped toward the bedside table. He reached out with two fingers, picked up the thick leather folder Evelyn had placed there, and flipped it open with a single, contemptuous snap of his wrist:

*FLAP.*

“You came to execute an involuntary, under-duress assignment of voting equity.”

Julian turned the pages, reading aloud with the cold, measured cadence of a federal judge reading an execution docket:

“‘Item Four: The undersigned, Chloe Vance, acknowledges that due to personal emotional instability and domestic complications arising from an out-of-wedlock birth, she irrevocably surrenders her twelve percent Class-A voting shares in Vance Development Group unto Caleb Vance for the nominal sum of ten thousand dollars.’”

Julian looked up, his eyes drilling straight through my father’s skull:

“You brought a notary to a postpartum recovery room twelve hours after an emergency cesarean section.”

“You threatened to withhold basic familial support unless she stripped herself of her inheritance.”

“And you did it because your son Caleb’s offshore factoring lines in Zurich collapsed forty-eight hours ago.”

Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace, her eyes wild with sudden, cornered panic:

“That is a lie! Caleb is a visionary! Caleb has secured the prime municipal concessions for the Port of Corpus Christi! Vance Development is worth two point four billion dollars!”

“Vance Development is a bankrupt shell, Evelyn,” Julian replied.

Every syllable fell like an eighty-pound iron anvil onto their coffins:

“For twenty-four months, your golden boy Caleb has been running an industrial-scale mezzanine embezzlement scheme through seven un-indexed logistics shells in Vaduz and Liechtenstein.”

Julian gestured behind him.
