The Kids Next Door Spent Every Sunday Cleaning Our Neighborhood – Then I Noticed What They Were Actually Doing

No one had.

At one point, she looked toward my window.

“The children chose your house first.”

I turned to her.

“Why?”

“Because Ben broke your flowerpot last summer.”

I remembered.

A baseball came over the fence and knocked a clay pot from my porch.

Ben appeared at my door crying before I even noticed it was broken.

I told him accidents happened and refused the five dollars he offered from his allowance.

Laura continued.

“He said you didn’t make him feel bad after he told the truth.”

That sentence hurt.

A nine-year-old had decided I was safe because I did not punish honesty.

I wished being safe required more.

Two hours later, Detective Vasquez called.

They found Rick’s truck near the cabin.

The children were alive.

Mia had used the emergency button on Rick’s old phone, which he had thrown into the back seat after replacing it. She triggered the distress signal while Rick was unloading supplies.

Police arrived before he reached the cabin.

He had zip ties, duct tape, two fuel containers, and the handgun from the photograph.

Ben had bruises around one wrist.

Mia had a cut above her eyebrow.

But they were alive.

Laura collapsed against me.

I held her while she screamed.

Not cried.

Screamed.

Every sound she had swallowed inside that house came out at once.

Rick was arrested.

The charges grew over the following weeks.

Domestic assault.

Unlawful restraint.

Child endangerment.

Kidnapping.

Weapons offenses.

Witness intimidation.

Investigators searched the cabin and found the hole.

It was not fresh.

It had been dug months earlier, lined with a plastic tarp, then covered with boards and leaves.

Rick claimed it was a waste pit.

No one believed him.

Police also found copies of Laura’s identification, a partially completed life-insurance form, and a typed letter that appeared to be a suicide note.

The note used phrases from messages Laura had sent her sister.

Rick had copied them to make it sound authentic.

He had planned more than violence.

He had planned a story.

That was what frightened me most.

Rick did not only want control over what happened to Laura.

He wanted control over what everyone believed afterward.

The flash drives destroyed that plan.
