The House Beside the Water

I nodded, though panic had already begun to rise like cold water.

“Will the baby be okay?”

“We can’t promise what we don’t know yet,” the doctor said. “But you have time, and you won’t be figuring this out alone.”

That last sentence nearly undid me.

On the drive back, I considered calling Alexander.

Then I imagined his voice, the questions, the possibility that I might hear Olivia’s name or another

explanation I could not bear.

I called Daniel instead.

He listened quietly while I told him what the doctor had said.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “Would you like me to help you find out exactly what the next appointment involves?”

“Yes,” I whispered. “And I need to know how to tell Alexander without making this another fight.”

“We can arrange a written update,” he said. “You can share the medical information without opening a conversation about the marriage.”
