Had his father known something about my mother that no one had told me?
Or had he simply wanted to leave me an offer, one I could accept without feeling beholden?
Daniel carefully placed the ledger back in its folder.
“We should preserve this with the rest of the records,” he said. “And we should make sure the company’s
review understands that the fund had a private history as well as a written policy.”
Alexander nodded.
“I’ll have the archive team document where it was found and who had access.”
“Not just your archive team,” Daniel replied. “An independent reviewer should verify it.”
“You’re right.”
There was no argument in him, only fatigue and a willingness to accept the scrutiny he had once
avoided.
I looked at the ledger.
“I don’t want to accept money from this account.”
“You don’t have to,” Alexander said.
“I don’t want it used to explain why I should stay married to you, either.”
