Alexander was waiting in the hallway.
He had attended the appointment at my invitation, with Daniel beside us.
When I emerged, he stood.
“How did it go?”
“They want to keep watching the same thing. There’s no new concern.”
His shoulders loosened.
“That’s good.”
“It is.”
He did not reach for me or ask to see the notes.
Instead, he asked, “Would you like me to carry the folder?”
I looked at the papers in my hands.
“No, thank you.”
“Of course.”
We walked outside together.
The sun had come out, and the pavement was bright beneath the clinic windows.
“I called the company’s compliance office,” he said. “They’re reviewing the account, and I’m cooperating.”
“Did you know Olivia was routing payments through it?”
“I knew the fund was used for staff and community support. I didn’t know about the apartment or the gifts.”
