Nothing came.
“Could it have been connected to one of the public donations?” Daniel asked.
“Maybe, but why would she write that he promised to keep it secret?”
“People keep private matters private for all kinds of reasons.”
His caution was sensible, but I felt the question tugging at me.
“Do the company records say anything about the photograph?”
“Not directly,” he said. “The account attached to the oldest payment was created years before Olivia was
hired, but it appears to have supported staff assistance and community projects.”
“So this may have nothing to do with her.”
“It may. It may not.”
He turned one of the pages toward me.
“The more recent expenses are different. Olivia requested payments for the apartment and several personal gifts through that account. Some were described as recognition awards or executive support.”
“Could Alexander have approved the account without knowing about each payment?”
“He could have. The records show that the account existed under the company’s policies, but we haven’t seen a clear approval from him for every individual expense.”
